DouroAzul orders hotel ship to West Sea to be built in Viana do Castelo

DouroAzul signed, today, with West Sea, a subsidiary of Martifer Group, the contracto for the construction of a new hotel ship to perform tourist cruises in the Douro River, in a 12 million euro investment.

West Sea, which in May assumed the sub concession of the shipyard in Viana do Castelo, with this order from DouroAzul, will debut in the shipbuilding, making a 50-year tradition return to this city in Minho, Northern Portugal.

Viking Osfrid is a ship very similar to the two hotel ships that DouroAzul started operating last March, having 79 metres of length, capacity for 106 passengers, 53 luxurious cabins and suites, using state of the art technology in terms of propulsion, navigation and also in energy efficiency.

The construction of the hotel ship will begin in early 2015, and is expected to be concluded before the end of the year, so it can start operating in Douro in March 2016.

"Once again, DouroAzul decided to deliver the construction of a hotel ship to a Portuguese shipyard, having, this time, chosen West Sea, which is operating in Viana do Castelo, a city with great tradition in the shipbuilding and repair segment", said Mário Ferreira, President of Douro Azul.

"Martifer thanks the trust deposited, once again, by DouroAzul, in our technical capacity, particularly by deciding to build Viking Osfrid in West Sea shipyard, in Viana do Castelo", stated Carlos Martins, President of Martifer.

Viking Osfrid, which will be exclusively operated to the American company Viking River Cruises, besides several rooms for passenger leisure, gymnasium and pool, also has a shuffleboard, a mini golf course, a herb garden and a panoramic area which allows for an excellent view of the landscape of the Douro margins, considered World Heritage by UNESCO.

DouroAzul's environmental concerns led to the installation of 168 PV solar panels which will generate a 21.5 Kw power.

With the construction of the Viking Osfrid, there will be six hotel ships built by Martifer in its shipyards, having the first five been built in Navalria, Aveiro. DouroAzul has in its fleet two other hotel ships, built previously in Viana do Castelo Shipyard.

"The construction of the Viking Osfrid in West Sea is, after ten years, the return of DouroAzul to Viana do Castelo, a shipyard with know-how and proven track record in the past, and that will now rise, bringing benefits to Viana do Castelo and Portugal", added Mário Ferreira.

In the construction of Viking Osfrid will be used 650 tons of steel, 5 tons of glass, around 15 km of pipes, 8 thousand litres of paint and 150 km of copper cables.

Once again, the interior design is made by Porto's architect Pilar Paiva de Sousa, all furniture will be produced in Portugal, in the Paços de Ferreira, the textile industry of Vale do Ave will supply all kinds of terry fabrics, the cutlery will be from Guimarães and tableware will be supplied by Vista Alegre.

With Viking Osfrid, DouroAzul's fleet is constituted by 11 hotel ships, three rabelo boats, the "Cacilheiro Trafaria Praia" and two luxury yachts.
